GIVET, Ville Fleurie "3 Fleurs"

  • Givet is a border town of 6749 inhabitants called the "Givetois". Givet is located in the north of the department, in "la Pointe". There is a Nature Reserve of 354 hectares (the second largest reserve of Champagne Ardenne). It is in Givet that the confluence of the Houille and the Meuse rivers is located. The left bank of the city is called the "Grand Givet" and the right bank is called the "Petit Givet".

    To be seen:
    Charlemont citadel of Givet created in 1555 and redesigned by Vauban in 1696, it owes its name to the Emperor Charles V.
    The Tour Grégoire is an old watchtower which would have been erected in the 11th century and which is located on the edge of the steep Mont d'Haurs.
    The Victory Tower is an old toll tower made of bricks and blue stone dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.
    The Porte de France used to protect the access to the city, south, on the left bank of the Meuse river, in the direction of Charleville and Rocroi. In 1862 it was fitted out for the passage of the railroad, then for the road.
    The Convent of the Récollectines, entirely renovated, constitutes a beautiful cultural complex (library, media library, exhibition space).
    The church of Saint Hilaire, destroyed in 1675, was quickly rebuilt. Some attribute the plan to Vauban but without proof.
    The Notre Dame church, rebuilt from 1729 to 1732, on the ruins of the church destroyed in 1696.
